Planning a tour from overseas can feel overwhelming, so we’ve put together a series of helpful steps to guide international visitors every step of the way.

Transport Information

Dublin Airport is approximately 15.8 km from Howth, with transfer times typically around 25 minutes.

Travel time may vary depending on traffic conditions and the type of transport chosen.

Below, you’ll find a range of options to suit different travel preferences.

Taxi Information

To reach Howth from anywhere in Dublin by taxi, you can simply hail a cab or book through an app such as Free Now or Uber. Taxi ranks are also located throughout the city for easy access.

When travelling, give the driver the destination “West Pier, Howth.” The journey typically takes around 30–40 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

Bus

To reach Howth by bus, take the H3 or 6. For timetables and updates, visit dublinbus.ie.

From the bus stop, turn left and walk towards the West Pier. Continue along the pier to the very end — the pontoon is located opposite Aqua Restaurant.

Train

From the DART station, exit down the steps and turn left. After approximately 50 metres, turn left again onto the West Pier. Continue along the pier to the very end — the pontoon is located opposite Aqua Restaurant.

Coach parking is not permitted on the West Pier. Please use the pier for drop-off only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do the boat tours depart from?

Tours depart from & return to the pontoon on the West Pier in Howth, located opposite Aqua Restaurant. The Eircode for directions is D13 H2V4.

Can I bring my dog on the boat trip?

Yes, dogs are welcome on board as long as they are kept on a lead. However, dogs are not permitted on the ferry that lands on Ireland’s Eye, as the island is a protected bird sanctuary.

Are the boat tours wheelchair accessible?

Yes, our boats are accessible for manual wheelchairs. Boarding is via a passenger pontoon. Unfortunately, landing on Ireland’s Eye is not wheelchair accessible. If you would like to discuss accessibility, please contact us at howthcliffcruises@gmail.com.

When is it possible to land on Ireland’s Eye?

If you wish to land on Ireland’s Eye, please book the direct ferry to the island. Landings begin on 17 April 2026. Please note that landing is at the captain’s discretion and depends on weather and sea conditions. If landing is not possible, you will have the option to join another boat tour or reschedule.

Do I need to book in advance?

We accept walk ons subject to availability, however we strongly recommend booking online in advance.

Is there anything I should bring with me?

You only need to bring yourself and your booking confirmation. We do recommend wearing suitable footwear and a jacket or rain jacket. All of our vessels have rain canopies and/or indoor cabins.

What happens if the weather is not suitable for sailing?

If weather conditions are not suitable for sailing, our team will notify you in advance and the tour will be rescheduled.

Are buggies allowed on the boat?

You can leave buggies securely on the pontoon and collect them when you return from the tour.

Do passengers have to wear life jackets during the tour?

No, life jackets are provided on board and are available for all passengers in case of emergency.

When is the best time to see puffins?

Puffins nest on Ireland’s Eye from March to July and are usually spotted along the cliffs at the back of the island. The Ireland’s Eye and Howth Coast Tour offers the best chance to see them, though sightings cannot be guaranteed.
